Drama's not your thing? I got you!

When I found out I had to take drama, I was scared. The last thing I wanted to do is try to act in front of my peers, I'm terrible at it. Don't get me wrong, I love watching people act, I just wish I was blessed with that talent as well. This activity is dedicated to students like me and I look forward using it in my own classroom to help students gain the confidence to be in a drama class.

During class we were asked to act out a seen based on the book The Arrival. For those that haven't heard this book before, its fantastic! A lot can be done with this book because there is not writing involved, its just pictures. You can have students inference what could be happening in the story or what could possibly happen.

This is the photo we were specifically looking at:

Our challenge in groups of three was to come up with a scene that lead to this exact moment. The scene had no specific starting point, that was up to us. However, the scene had to have ended like this photo. Now, let's get to the good part. The roles that had to used within the group were the male and  female seen in this photo and the final group member was the director. The director did not have to act, but simply direct how they wanted the scene to play out. I chose this role since I am shy when it comes to acting and I absolutely loved it! I felt so comfortable in the classroom and  I felt so confident after my group presented, like yeah I came up with that!

I highly encourage teachers to give students the option to be a director at times. I think it would be fantastic as a starting drama lesson to help students gain that confident and comfortability with their peers in the class. I think it would help them a lot as it helped me !
