Reflection:

Using the Assessment Page during Placement:

I will use this assessment page of my Digital Portfolio during my first teaching block by looking over my AER Strategy form to make sure I can find more resources, advice, and experiences to develop a better understanding of things I wasn’t as clear about. I found the Growing Success Document  to be super helpful in learning new things within the last 6 weeks. I can look back on what I have learned over the last few weeks, and use this knowledge to help me become a better educator in the classroom. 

I can also use this assessment page to post more information that I have learned about assessment in the future, that way all my resources can be organized in one space, and is only a click away. New information can be found through other courses in the future, or hands on experiences within my placement. This will allow me to reflect on my experiences, look back on previous posts to be able to improve my skills within the classroom. 

Assessment Resource

An assessment resource that relates to the language curriculum focusing on the oral communication strand is Supporting English Language Learners. Regarding the Growing Success Document, this resource best represents the policy English Language Learners. This resource focuses on understanding these students, working together to support these students, and providing accommodations and modifications to better the students learning. The policy and the resource both touch upon creating modifications and accommodations for these students that I believe is very useful for pre-service and in-service teachers to read upon to learn about new strategies to use within the classroom.

Week 11!

Wrapping up the course, like the gifts were going to start wrapping up for Christmas! (ha ha.. this is why I'm becoming a teacher, not a comedian).

This week we started the class with a fun activity, MATH RELAY! Students are divided into equal teams depending on the class size, the teacher will write on the board what each student is required to do, for example:

Student 1: Multiplies by 2 
Student 2: Adds 8
Student 3: Subtracts 5
Student 4: Divides by 5
Student 5: Subtracts 3

The teacher provides the class with any number he/she choices, the first student then multiples the number by 2 and tells students #2 the new number, once it gets to student #5 they will then write the final number on the board. This game is great because it not only gives students an opportunity to practice their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, but it also encourages them to complete it with speed and teamwork!

Throughout this lesson we discussed Assessment FOR, OF and AS learning, that helped me develop a better understanding:
Assessment FOR learning (formative & diagnostic assessments) 
  • used to determine student progress
  • teachers can adjust learning to meet the needs of the student and provide feedback 
Assessment OF learning (summative)
  • is the use of a task or an activity to measure, record and report on a student's level of achievement
Assessment AS learning (peer of self-assessment)
  • allows students to use assessment to further their own learning 
  • Students can reflect on their own learning and set personal goals

The last activity we participated in was the EGG HUNT! Now this was my favourite activity, and I would definitely incorporate it into my future classroom. Students are asked to work in pairs, each pair receives a map, and a route planner.

The object of the Egg Hunt is for partners to work together collaboratively to figure out how many eggs they can collect within 4000km. Each group starts and ends in St. Catharines on the map. Each group can only collect the eggs from one location once. This activity is great to enhance problem solving skills, addition, teamwork, and communication skills.

Overall, this class has given me a lot of great activities to incorporate into lesson plans, and has made me feel more comfortable teaching mathematics. I hope you enjoyed my journey through reading my math blogs!
